During the second day of competition at the Paris Olympics, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was determined to be overweight in the 50 kg category, which may hinder her chances of securing a podium finish on Wednesday evening.

In a tragic turn of events for Vinesh Phogat, the wrestler has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics after failing to meet the weight requirement on the morning of her 50 kg gold medal match.

“The Indian contingent regrets to announce the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg category,” stated the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). “Despite the team’s diligent efforts throughout the night, she weighed in slightly over the 50kg limit this morning. No further statements will be issued by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests that Vinesh’s privacy be respected as they concentrate on the ongoing competitions.”

Earlier reports indicated that the wrestler was approximately 100 grams above the allowable weight, which ultimately resulted in her disqualification. Under the competition regulations, Phogat will not be eligible for a silver medal, leaving only gold and bronze medalists in the 50 kg category.

She successfully achieved the required weight for the bouts scheduled on Tuesday; however, according to regulations, wrestlers must maintain their weight category throughout both days of the competition.

Sources HKA Media indicate that the wrestler, who remarkably advanced to the final against all expectations, was roughly 2 kilograms over the limit on Tuesday evening. She spent the entire night awake, exerting every effort to meet the weight requirements, engaging in activities such as jogging, skipping, and cycling.

Nevertheless, this effort was insufficient. According to sources, the Indian delegation requested additional time for her to lose the final 100 grams, but their appeal was unsuccessful.

This is not the first instance in which Phogat has struggled to meet the weight requirement in the 50 kg category, which is lower than the 53 kg category in which she typically competes. She encountered a comparable challenge during the Olympic qualifiers, where she barely managed to qualify.

On Tuesday, Phogat made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to advance to the Olympic final. During her journey to the gold medal match, she achieved a remarkable victory against the world number one and favored contender Yui Susaki from Japan, subsequently securing two additional strategically impressive wins against competitors from Ukraine and Cuba.

She was set to compete against Sarah Hildebrandt in the final, a wrestler with whom Phogat has a superior head-to-head record. However, the American will now receive the gold medal, leaving Phogat without any accolades.
