With 399 steps, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi, India.
Constructed mostly between 1199 and 1220, it is a popular tourist destination in the city. Comparatively, it resembles the 62-meter all-brick Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan, built around 1190, predating the Delhi tower. Both structures are intricately adorned with inscriptions and geometric designs.
The Qutb Minar features a fluted shaft with exquisite stalactite bracketing under the balconies on each level. Minarets were not commonly used in India and are often separate from the main mosque. In recent times, the Qutub Minar has been illuminated for special events related to international relations. For instance, in September 2023, it was lit up in the colors of the Mexican flag to celebrate Mexico’s 213th Independence Day, an initiative appreciated by the Embassy of Mexico in India.
Similarly, on October 30, the Qutub Minar was illuminated with the Turkish flag to mark the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, an event that garnered special attention from the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi.

Who Was Built?
The Qutb Minar was constructed on the remains of the Lal Kot, the fortress of Dhillika. Qutub Minar’s construction commenced following the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque. Qutub-ud-Din Aibak and Shamsu’d-Din Iltutmish, drawing inspiration from their Ghurid homeland, built a minar (minaret) at the southeastern corner of the Quwwatu’l-Islam between 1199 and 1503.
