Mamta banarjee Meet Doctors – RGKar College News – Chief Minister Mamata stated, “I have come to see you as your ‘Didi’ (elder sister), not in my capacity as Chief Minister.” The doctors expressed their appreciation for the Chief Minister’s visit; however, they affirmed that they would not relent until their demands are addressed.
In a renewed effort to address the concerns of resident doctors who are protesting, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the demonstration site in the Salt Lake area on Saturday, September 14, 2024, and encouraged the doctors to resume their duties.
Ms. Banerjee addressed the protesting doctors, stating, “I have come to meet you in the capacity of your elder sister, rather than as the Chief Minister. This represents my final effort to address the ongoing crisis.”
The Chief Minister further assured the protesting doctors, whom she regards as her brothers and sisters, that she would refrain from taking any punitive measures against them.
I stand in solidarity with your movement. I will thoroughly examine the demands presented to us, and should any wrongdoing be identified, we will take the necessary measures. It is my desire that justice prevails. I will urge the Central Bureau of Investigation to expedite the process of delivering justice, she stated.
The Chief Minister expressed that, similar to the doctors who are demonstrating in the open and enduring sleepless nights in adverse weather, she too is finding it difficult to rest. Accompanied by State Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar, Ms. Banerjee arrived at the location in Salt Lake Sector 5 around 1 p.m., surprising those gathered there.
The Chief Minister declared the dissolution of all “Rogi Kalyan Committees (Patient Welfare Bodies)” across state-operated hospitals, including R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Resident doctors have been on strike since August 9, following the discovery of the body of a 31-year-old physician at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The protesting physicians expressed their appreciation for the Chief Minister’s visit; however, they indicated that they would suspend their strike until their demands are addressed. They called for prompt discussions with the State Government to resolve the ongoing crisis. The junior doctors, who have been demonstrating outside the State Health Department headquarters for the fifth consecutive day on Saturday, September 14, 2024, asserted that they would not relent on their demands.
The doctors’ five-point agenda includes the dismissal of the Kolkata Police Commissioner and senior officials from the State Health Department. Additionally, they are advocating for enhanced security measures for healthcare professionals and the elimination of the prevailing “threat culture” within hospitals and medical colleges throughout West Bengal.
Negotiations between the State Government and the doctors were unable to commence on September 12, 2024. The protesting doctors requested that the meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee be livestreamed; however, the State Government declined, citing that it was a ‘subjudice matter’ and could not be broadcast live on Thursday, September 12, 2024.
On Friday, September 13, 2024, junior doctors engaged in protests in West Bengal addressed a letter to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking their involvement in resolving the deadlock surrounding the R.G. Kar hospital rape and murder case.
Previously, the Chief Minister remarked, “29 valuable lives have been lost due to the interruption of health services caused by the prolonged strike by junior doctors.” She also declared a financial compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of those who have died as a result of the “disruption” in health services.
The protesting doctors had besieged the Swastha Bhawan on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, just one day after the Supreme Court urged them to return to their duties. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, stated on September 9 (Monday) that doctors must not ignore the needs of the community they are meant to serve and encouraged them to resume work by 5 p.m. on September 10, 2024.
