kolkata rape case – The IMA has notably initiated the strike in response to the ongoing protests in Kolkata regarding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has officially announced a nationwide cessation of services by modern medicine practitioners, scheduled to commence at 6 am on Saturday, August 17, and conclude at 6 am on Sunday, August 18. This strike has been organized in response to the ongoing protests in Kolkata regarding the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. According to the IMA’s statement, routine outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries will be suspended during this 24-hour period, although essential services will continue to operate.
All critical services will continue to operate. Casualty departments will remain staffed. Routine outpatient departments will be closed, and elective surgeries will be suspended. The withdrawal of services will affect all areas where practitioners of modern medicine are employed. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) seeks the support of the nation for the rightful cause of its medical professionals, as stated in the release.
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has also declared a protest in response to the incident, scheduled to take place at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on August 16.

In order to express our dissent against these actions, we (BMC MARD, IMA, IMA JDN, ASMI) are organizing a peaceful demonstration at Azad Maidan, Mumbai, on August 16, 2024, at 1 PM. We invite our fellow medical practitioners, including doctors, medical students, resident doctors, senior physicians, and other associations, to participate in this protest against the injustice,” MARD announced in a press release.
Additionally, members of the Bengali film and television industry have expressed solidarity with the protesting doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The catalyst for these nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community was the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9.
