Bangladesh News Update – Muhammad Yunus, a recipient of the Nobel Prize, assumed leadership during a tumultuous political environment characterized by widespread protests and violence, which ultimately led to the removal of Sheikh Hasina from power.

New Delhi: In a significant address to diplomats in Dhaka on Sunday, Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, emphasized the necessity of comprehensive reforms prior to the upcoming general elections. This event represented Mr. Yunus’ inaugural interaction with the diplomatic community since he took office on August 8, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Mr. Yunus, a Nobel laureate, assumed his role during a tumultuous political period characterized by widespread protests and violence that led to Ms. Hasina’s removal. In his speech, Yunus presented the interim government’s strategy for establishing a stable and democratic Bangladesh, commencing with the commitment to conduct a free, fair, and inclusive election.
“We will conduct a free, fair, and participatory election as soon as we fulfill our mandate to implement essential reforms in our election commission, judiciary, civil administration, security forces, and media,” he stated to the diplomats, which included India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pranay Verma.

Reestablishing Normalcy.

On August 5, Ms. Hasina, 76 years old, departed from Bangladesh via helicopter to India as demonstrators took control of the streets of Dhaka. Her 15-year tenure, characterized by accusations of human rights violations, concluded in a dramatic fashion. The weeks preceding her removal were marked by violence, resulting in over 450 fatalities amid the turmoil, alongside numerous reports of assaults on the Hindu minority community in Bangladesh.

The Chief Adviser emphasized that reestablishing law and order in the nation is of utmost importance for his administration. Mr. Yunus stated, “With the steadfast support of our citizens and dedicated armed forces, we anticipate returning to a state of normalcy in a brief timeframe.” He further noted, “The primary focus of the Interim Government will be to manage the law and order situation effectively… The armed forces will remain engaged in support of civil authority as long as necessary

Restoring Economic Vitality.

Alongside advocating for political reforms, Mr. Yunus emphasized the necessity for comprehensive economic reforms. He characterized the nation’s plight as a consequence of what he termed Ms. Hasina’s “brutal dictatorship,” which, according to Mr. Yunus, resulted in pervasive corruption and mismanagement.

“Our administration will implement extensive economic reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and fostering growth,” he stated.

Mr. Yunus accused Sheikh Hasina of systematically undermining the country’s institutions throughout her 15-year rule. He claimed that elections conducted during Ms. Hasina’s governance were manipulated, and democratic freedoms were curtailed.

“In her quest to maintain power, Sheikh Hasina’s regime dismantled every institution within the country,” Mr. Yunus asserted. He portrayed the judiciary as compromised and charged the previous administration with permitting political favoritism to deplete banks and misappropriate state resources.

The Nobel laureate referred to the recent widespread protests as a “Second Revolution,” spearheaded by students and ordinary citizens striving to reclaim their democratic rights.

Global Assistance.

In his address to the global community, Mr. Yunus emphasized the necessity for ongoing assistance in the reconstruction of Bangladesh and the establishment of a fully operational democracy. He reassured the diplomats that Bangladesh would uphold its commitment to multilateralism, positioning the United Nations as a central element of its foreign policy.

“We are confident that all our allies and partners in the international community will support our government and citizens as we navigate towards a new democratic future,” Yunus stated.
